How to Stop History from Repeating—And Build a Better Future

Written by Jed Ismael on

If progress is inevitable, why does life keep getting more complicated? Are we addressing the root causes—or just reacting to the consequences? We’ve seen this cycle before: outrage, division, resistance, the fight for rights. And yet, somehow, it always comes back.

But what if this isn’t just history repeating itself? What if something deeper within us is driving the pattern? Because history isn’t just a sequence of events. It’s a reflection of human nature.

Unhealed fear keeps humanity trapped in cycles—reacting instead of truly progressing, as explored in Breaking the Cycle of Trauma.

Running in Circles: The Illusion of Progress

We assume we’re progressing because we see movement—laws passed, leaders replaced, battles won. But movement alone isn’t progress. Without addressing the root cause, we’re just running in circles. How much has changed if we fight the same battles under different names? We like to believe we’re smarter than those before us. We’ve learned from history and won’t repeat their mistakes. But what if the problem isn’t what we know—but how we think?

Prisoners of Our Own Fears

Fear was meant to protect us, not trap us. Yet here we are—still afraid, still fighting, still mistaking survival mode for the only way to live. Fear doesn’t just live in our minds. It’s weaponized—turned into a tool to control us. It’s fed to us, reintroduced, and reinforced until it dictates how we see the world.

So, what happens when fear takes over?

That’s when it stops warning us about danger—and starts manufacturing it. Instead of imagining a future, we cling to whatever the present offers. We mistake familiarity for safety and choose it over change. Even when it is slowly destroying us.

Trapped on Both Sides

It’s easy to label those who oppose us as the bad guys—to assume they’re unreachable, beyond reason. But did they wake up one day and choose hatred? Or are they trapped as well? Because if we want to change their minds, we must first understand how to reach them. And If history keeps repeating, it’s because they are just as trapped in the cycle as we are.

How Visibility, Exposure, and Connection Help Us Overcome Fear

The most powerful shifts in history didn’t come from shouting louder. They happened when people refused to let fear dictate the narrative. They happened through Visibility, Exposure, and Connection. Because fear thrives in the unknown. So when the unfamiliar becomes familiar, fear loses its grip.

When the “other” is no longer an abstract threat but a real human being, the walls we build begin to crack. It’s natural to fear the unknown. But it’s not normal to let fear define the truth.

Are We Ready to Rewrite History

Are We Fighting to Win a Battle—Or to End the War? Because those are two very different things. And only one leads to real change. We all want to believe someone else knows better and will save us. But the truth is, everybody is just as messed up as we are, and nobody is coming to save us. That’s why we have to save ourselves.

We must change how the story is told to stop history from repeating itself. We must become the storytellers. The power to end hate has never belonged to those who spread it. It belongs to those who refuse to let fear decide the future. It belongs to you. Yes, you. Right now, you have the power to break the cycle.

Every act of courage, every story shared, every moment of kindness—it all ripples outward. And when enough of us choose love over fear, connection over division, and truth over control—the cycle will break. And this time, history won’t repeat. Because this time, we are the ones rewriting it.

Reflections, Progress, and a Little Chaos

This article is the third part in a larger series called Reflections, Progress, and a Little Chaos, where I explore how patterns shape our world.

In the next article, we’ll explore the patterns that influence nutrition and health and why eating healthy is so hard. Breaking free isn’t just about history—it’s about how we live daily. Stay tuned.
